Community Association
of Domokos Márton Kert

City of Debrecen
Hungary

Opre Roma as a non-governmental organization was set up by the Roma (Gypsy) residents of the Domokos Marton Kert settlement in Debrecen (eastern Hungary) The NGO aims at the improvement of the health and life of its members and Roma people in general. Our priorities include to implement a housing project along with community and cultural development, education, training and employment.

Since 2003, Roma and non-Roma have worked together voluntarily for the above aims. Opre Rome runs its programmes with the help of researchers of the Faculty of Public Health, University of Debrecen who came into contact with the community during a field research project on the environmental health of Roma communities. The Association firmly believes that the only sustainable solution towards health and a better quality of life for Roma should be integrative and complex, encompassing housing, training, employment and community development. Here you can find further information on the past activities of the community as well as plans for the future.
